Matrix Design's "Neverland": A Harmonious Dialogue Between Architecture and Nature

Winner of the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2022

In the heart of Kunming, Matrix Design's "Neverland" project stands as a testament to the seamless integration of architecture and nature. This award-winning design, spanning 3000 square meters, reflects a profound respect for the spirit of the site, resulting in a harmonious blend of modern, simple, and natural elements.

Matrix Design drew inspiration from the surrounding landscape, particularly the majestic Fuxian Lake. The design team, comprising Wang Guan, Liu Jianhui, and Wang Zhaobao, sought to create a space that would not disrupt the natural beauty of the area but rather enhance it. The result is a building that stands proudly on the hillside, appearing as a flowing blue crystal in the landscape.

The unique properties of "Neverland" lie in its dialogue with nature. The design team aimed to create a space that would not only respect the site but also understand its spirit. This understanding led to a design that perfectly matches the natural surroundings without disrupting their harmony. The building, landscape, and interior space are closely interlinked, responding to the natural environment while satisfying the building's function.

The realization of "Neverland" involved the use of light-coloured artificial stone, wood veneer, textured paint, chiselled stone, metal wood grille, and brass. The design team faced the challenge of creating a monolithic block structure that would allow for upper and lower exchanges and surrounding circulation. This structure, combined with precise gaps, resulted in a vertical and horizontal fusion, adding another layer of light-bearing space to the sense of fullness.

The design team also sought to incorporate the vastness and panoramic view of the world into the room. This was achieved by creating spaces where one could see the mountains and the water of Fuxian Lake from any angle. The designers used the blank processing method to achieve the interaction of multiple relationships, the mutual reflection of stone and wood, and the integration of design and art.

The project, which started in October 2019 and finished in January 2021, was awarded the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2022. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. "Neverland" certainly fits this description, with its strong technical characteristics, splendid artistic skill, and remarkable level of excellence.

In conclusion, Matrix Design's "Neverland" project is a shining example of how architecture and nature can coexist harmoniously. The project showcases the design team's ability to respect and understand the spirit of a site, resulting in a design that is not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing. The project serves as a reminder of the potential for architecture to enhance, rather than disrupt, the natural beauty of a location.
